2003 AIA Philadelphia Awards for Design Excellence

Four architectural projects were awarded with Honor Awards, and 11 projects were honored with Awards of Recognition at the 2003 AIA Philadelphia Awards for Design Excellence celebration on October 9 at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel. Images of these projects can be seen at the Design Excellence Exhibit at the Rotunda at Liberty Place, running through October 18.

Other award recipients were honored at the ceremony, including Vincent G. Kling, FAIA, who was presented with the John Harbeson Award for lifetime achievement of the highest standards of professionalism, accomplishment and regard for the development of his younger colleagues. AIA Philadelphia’s Young Architect Award was presented to Todd K. Woodward, AIA, of Susan Maxman & Partners Ltd., for demonstrated excellence and exceptional contributions to the field of architecture.

The Community Design Collaborative of AIA Philadelphia presented its “Community Design Award” that recognizes excellence in design and client collaboration in a project by Collaborative volunteers. The following volunteers were honored: Taylor Boyd, PE, of Kling; Jason Causton; Bruce Chamberlin, AIA, of H2L2 Architects/Planners; Richard King, AIA, of MGA Partners; Xiaofeng Ma of Ballinger; Stephanie Sarin of Phillip Jordan Architects; and Mark Silks, PE, of RAM-Tech Engineers, Inc.

Thomas Beeby, FAIA, served as the jury chair and narrated the presentation of the winning projects with jurors’ comments from the Chicago jury of five architects. Beeby is principal at Hammond Beeby Rupert Ainge Inc. in Chicago. The other jurors included Laurence O. Booth, FAIA, of Booth Hansen Associates; Paul Florian, AIA, of Florian Architects; Margaret I. McCurry, FAIA, IIDA, ASID, of Tigerman McCurry Architects; and Adrian Smith, FAIA, RIBA, of Skidmore Owings & Merrill, LLP (SOM). The guest speaker at the awards ceremony was Clifford Pearson, senior editor of Architectural Record magazine.
