2004 AIA Philadelphia Awards for Design Excellence

The elusive Gold and Silver Medals were awarded this year to two architecture firms whose work was deemed to be of the “most exemplary design quality.” Seven firms received Honor Awards, and 10 projects were honored with Awards of Recognition at the 2004 AIA Philadelphia Awards for Design Excellence celebration on October 14 at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel. Other award recipients were honored at the ceremony, including John A. Bower Jr., FAIA, of Bower Lewis Thrower Architects, who was presented with the John Harbeson Award for lifetime achievement of the highest standards of professionalism, accomplishment and regard for the development of his younger colleagues. AIA Philadelphia’s Young Architect Award was presented to Shawn P. Evans, AIA, of Atkin Olshin Lawson-Bell Architects for demonstrated excellence and exceptional contributions to the field of architecture.

The Community Design Collaborative of AIA Philadelphia presented the Community Design Award to Lutheran Settlement House and its volunteer team. This annual award recognizes Collaborative clients and volunteers for design excellence, strong collaboration and community impact. Beatriz Vieira, executive director of Lutheran Settlement House; Michael Hauptman, AIA, and Scott Larkin of Brawer & Hauptman, Architects; Mitchell Swann, PE, of MDC Systems; Chris Wurst III, PE, RCDD, of C-Quest Associates, Inc.; and John Frondorf of Becker & Frondorf received the award.

Silver Medal: Unbuilt
Awarded to one unbuilt project of the most exemplary design quality

  • Erdy McHenry Architecture: NoLi Housing, Philadelphia

Honor Awards: Built
Awarded to projects that exemplify high design quality

  • Agoos/Lovera Architects: Hunter Elementary School, Philadelphia
  • Bohlin Cywinski Jackson: Liberty Bell Center, Philadelphia
  • Granary Associates: Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center - Pediatric Day Hospital, New York, NY
  • Qb3: Private Residence, Philadelphia

Honor Awards: Unbuilt

  • Kling: Zhiye Plaza Office Tower, Jiangsu, China
  • KieranTimberlake Associates LLP: Loblolly House, Taylor’s Island, MD

Preservation Awards of Recognition
Awarded to preservation projects that deserve recognition

  • VITETTA: Reconstruction of the North Arcade Building, Glen Echo Park, Glen Echo, MD
  • DPK&A Architects, LLP: Renovations to City Council Chambers, Philadelphia City Hall, Philadelphia

At the ceremony, Richard Gluckman, FAIA, distinguished architect and principal of Gluckman Mayner Architects, served as jury chair, representing the jury of three New York architects with a presentation of images narrated with jurors’ comments. The other two New York jurors were Karl A. Lehrke, AIA, partner of R.M.Kliment and Frances Halsband Architects; and Frank Lupo, AIA, senior associate, Fox & Fowle Architects.
