Bridges and Structure

Height of the Henry Avenue Bridge

We used a plumb line with a plumb bob to find out how far the Henry Ave. Bridge is above the Wissahickon Creek. A plumb line is a string with a weight called a plumb bobb. It's used to measure the height of things that are too high to measure another way. Our plumb bob was a heavy rock attached to a plumb line which was made from twine.

We had to drop our line 3 times because the first couple of times the rock either fell off, the rope broke, or the rope was too short. Finally we dropped the plumb bob off of the Henry Ave. Bridge until the tip of the rock touched the water.

The next day we took the rope outside to measure. The measurement of 192 feet told us that the Henry Ave. Bridge is 192 feet above the Wissahickon Creek.
