Culture and Community
Focus on Social Studies. Looking at Egypt and Greece and their
indigenous architecture, lifestyle and community planning.
6th Grade
Fall Semester, 1-1/2 Hours/Week
Activities:
- We began with an introduction to
Architecture. Discussion what architecture is and what architects do
followed by a few activities on plan and elevation.
- The students began by looking at Ancient Egypt and Greece. Focusing
on the lifestyle, tools and architecture of the time. The students were
facinated by mumies and spent more time than originally planned looking at
the existence and meaning of mumies.
- They focused on Greece studying temples, gods, goddesses, greek
architecture, language, & history.
- As the students explored the greek temples they became familiar with
basic architecture vocabulary. They also
learned the greek alphabet and used to write their new vocabulary words.
- They became familiar with three orders
of Greek Architecture.
The students were interviewed to create a Public Television Spotlight.

- was there any signigicance of the column?
- what were the different column capitol designs?
- what materials were used to build the buildings?
