We mixed sand and water to make mortar so we could put stone on the face of the bridge. We did this so our model would look like the real one. We used metal to make the skeleton for the face of the bridge so it would be strong enough to support the mortar and stone. When the mortar dried, it looked like cement.
When we were mixing the mortar we learned about ratio and proportion. To make the mixture, the ratio of water to sand is 1:3. We could also write this 1 to 3 or 1 part water to 3 parts sand. We mixed the mortar with tools and we used tools for putting the mortar on the bridge, too.
