Each student will play the role of the client, architect, and contractor of the project. The client of one project which has another architect and contractor, etc. The projects will roll from one person to another with others overseeing it.
5th GradeConcepts to learn: To understand the development and application of problem solving skills which are a constant use as a life long learning process.
Primary Goal: To understand and appreciate the built
environment
Secondary Goal: To plan, design, and build skyscrapers.
Goals for Students: To help students recognize the process of
architectural design. To further develop vocabulary, math, cooperative
learning, team building and problem - solving skills. To plan, design,
and construct a finished product.
Lesson One: Floor Plans
Objective: To understand and describe the components of a floor
plan.
Activities:
Students completed the floor plan activity handed out
and proceeded to draw plans of their own.
Lesson Two: Plan & Elevation
Objective: To have the students understand plan and elevation
through demonstrations.
Activities: Demonstrate concepts of plan and elevation using paper
cups. Plan & Elevation
Activity using a bell pepper. The students will use objects in the
classroom to demonstrate their knowledge of the concepts. Develop groups
as clients, designers and builders and discuss the role of each of these
players in the making of a building.
Lesson Three: Recognition of Skyscrapers
Objective: To have the students recognize a skyscraper
Activities: Take a walking trip through Center City Philadelphia to
give the students the opportunity to see what an actual skyscraper looked
like.
Lesson Four: Reflections
Objective: To define a skyscraper
Activities: The
students wrote reactions to the class trip. Preview and discuss the
pictures that we took of the skyscrapers. Brainstorm about the
skyscrapers designs (the type, for who-what, location, environmental
factors.)
Lesson Five: Structure and Materials
Objective: To think about and draw skyscrapers
Activities: Students draw their skyscrapers, and experiment with
different types of materials to determine structure. Students Designs
Materials: poster board, paper, rulers, pencils, colored pencils,
some computer generated drawing.
Lesson Six: Structu nd Materials
Objective: To define materials types
Activities: After viewing and experimenting with different
materials types, each group determined which material would be
preferred.
