The Institute will include presentations, studio activities, bus and walking tours to demonstrate how architecture can be used as a rich, thematic focus for active student learning in language arts, math, social studies and art.

Participating educators will be eligible to receive three graduate credits upon completion of the course.

AIE Summer Institute Sample Schedule:

Day One: Architecture and City Planning

  • Introduction to Cities slide presentation
  • Agrarian and Industrial City Planning activity
  • Bus and Walking Tour with Walk Philadelphia
  • City Hall and Tower Tour with Greta Greenberger

Day Two: Buildings, Streetscapes, Open Spaces
& Communities

  • Slides: Visual Elements & Principles of Design & Architecture
  • Group Streetscape Collage Murals
  • Architecture Visual Dictionary
  • Bus Tour of North Philadelphia

Day Three: Architectural Conventions, The Client
& The Design Process

  • Slides: House Form, Culture, Climate, Geography, Materials and Technology
  • Architectural Conventions -- Exercises
  • Client Profile Interview Activity
  • Bubble Diagram to Floor Plan
  • Rowhouse Renovation Model Project

Day Four: Architecture from Other Lands and Other Times (Day spent at Philadelphia Museum of Art)

  • Slides: The Architecture of the Philadelphia Museum of Art Building
  • Architectural Installations at the Philadelphia Museum of Art
  • European and American Period Rooms

Day Five: Putting It All Together

  • Curriculum Planning and AIE Resource Center
  • Group meetings with architects and experienced teachers
  • Individual Lesson/Unit Planning and Research in Resource Center
  • Share Plans and Wrap-up
